The Deaf Education and Visual Impairment Teams in the Sensory Support Service supports children and young people who have a hearing loss or visual impairment. A child/young person can be referred by a Clinician or educational setting we can then assess their needs and provide appropriate support and advice. The team provides support to parents / carers and the schools/settings.
Support may include:
- practical, and emotional, support to families on how to help their child learn and develop
- specialist assessments of need
- direct teaching in schools and settings
- advice to staff in schools and settings
- training for staff in schools and settings
- mobility training for children and young people (VI)
- supporting transition from one setting to another
- supporting hearing technologies (Deaf Ed)
- EHCP’s and Annual Reviews
- risk assessments
The team may become involved with a child from birth and they may remain involved with a child/ young person until they are 19 (25 for young people with complex needs). The amount and type of support depends on the severity of the child’s needs.
