The Deaf Education Team in the Sensory Support Service team supports children and young people who have a hearing loss. A child/young person can be referred by a clinician or educational setting. We then assess their needs and provide appropriate support and advice. The team also provides support to parents / carers and educational settings.
The type and level of support depends on the severity of the child’s hearing loss and may include:
- Personalised practical and emotional support to families on how to help their child learn and develop
- Specialised assessments of need
- Assistance in transitioning from one setting to another
- Training and advice
- Liaison with audiology and CI centre and advice on ALD
- Set up of hearing technologies
- Acoustic audits and advice
- Advice re exam concessions for SATs / GCSEs
- Pre-teaching and post-teaching
- EHCPs and Annual Reviews
- Risk Assessments
The team may become involved with a child from birth and we may remain involved with a child/ young person until they are 19 (25 for young people with complex needs). The amount and type of support depends on the severity of the child’s impairment.
