My child is at school

Several routine vaccinations are delivered through schools as part of the national immunisation programme. Each vaccine is offered at specific ages.

What vaccines does my child need?

Flu vaccine: Flu can make children very unwell and sometimes cause serious illnesses such as pneumonia.  Children in primary, secondary and special schools can get a free flu vaccine at school.

It is offered every year to children aged 2 to 3 years, school-aged children (Reception to Year 11), and children with certain long-term health conditions.

Most children receive the vaccine as a quick and painless nasal spray.

You will hear from Intrahealth about the flu vaccine in school. Look out for the e-consent form from your child's school and return it to make sure they do not miss out.

Further information about the flu vaccine can be found here on the NHS website.

HPV vaccine: The HPV vaccine helps protect against human papillomavirus (HPV). It's recommended for children aged 12 to 13 years old and people at higher risk from HPV.

HPV can cause several cancers later in life, including cervical, throat, anal and penile cancers, as well as genital warts.

You will receive information from IntraHealth about the vaccination programme. Please look out for the e-consent form and return it to make sure your child does not miss out on their vaccination.

Further information about the HPV vaccine can be found here on the NHS website.

3 in 1 teenage booster: The 3-in-1 teenage booster helps protect against tetanus, diphtheria and polio.  The booster helps top up the protection your child received from their earlier childhood vaccinations.

It is usually offered to children in school Year 9 through the school-aged immunisation programme and is also recommended for people at higher risk of these illnesses.

You will receive information from IntraHealth about the vaccination programme. Please look out for the e-consent form and return it to make sure your child does not miss out on their vaccination.

Further information about the 3 in 1 teenage booster can be found here on the NHS website.

MenACWY vaccine: The MenACWY vaccine helps protect against the bacteria that cause meningitis and sepsis, which can be very serious and can sometimes be life-threatening.

The vaccine is usually offered to young people in Year 9 at school. If it has been missed, it can be given up to the age of 25.

You will receive information from IntraHealth about the vaccination programme. Please look out for the e-consent form and return it to make sure your child does not miss out on their vaccination.

Further information about the MenACWY vaccine can be found here on the NHS website.

Are your child’s vaccinations up to date?

Check your child's Red Book or contact your GP practice if you're not sure which vaccines your child has had. Vaccines work best when given at the recommended age, but it's never too late to catch up on missed vaccinations.
