Getting started can be hard

Thinking about starting an activity or exercise plan? Don't know where to start? Have a list of worries as long as your arm? We got you!

After speaking to a group of people who have recently taken up sport or have just started moving more, we realised that lots of people feel stuck and unsure where to start.

Staying motivated

Getting started is one thing...keeping going can be even harder. Here’s what people told us:

  • You started once, so you can do it again.
  • Taking a break is fine if it works for you.
  • Swap “I should” for “I want to” – the right activity feels much easier to stick with.
  • Keep a record of your exercise; looking back can be a real boost.
  • If it motivates you, set goals or a friendly challenge.
  • Track progress in ways that matter to you – sleep, fitness, energy, how your clothes fit, or simply how you feel.
  • Do what you can; you’re only one person.
  • Avoid comparing yourself to others – you never know their story.

Keeping it interesting

Routines can sometimes feel repetitive. Try these ideas:

  • Change your walking or running routes to enjoy new scenery and challenges.
  • Save a new album or artist for your workouts – two treats in one.
  • Exercise while watching your favourite show (and take a breather during the adverts!).
  • Try different versions of the same class – the atmosphere and experience can vary a lot.
  • Take notice of the world around you: changing seasons, new buildings, decorations, colours and more. There's always something new to spot.
