There are lots of different options available for early years childcare and education, and it can be challenging to decide what will work best for your family. Here’s a guide to the key differences to the different options that are available in Warrington as stepping stones to school.  

1. Childminders

  • Registered with Ofsted and care for children in their own home.

  • Can look after children from birth to 16, but usually no more than 6 under the age of 8 (including their own children).

  • Offer a flexible service—many are available during evenings, weekends, and school holidays.

  • All childminders are trained, including paediatric first aid, and are regularly inspected.


2. Day Nurseries

  • Care for babies and young children up to 5 years old.

  • Open most of the year, usually from 8am to 6pm.

  • May follow a specific educational approach like Montessori or Forest School.

  • Run by a mix of private companies, charities, or employers.

  • Ofsted-registered and inspected for quality and safety.


3. Maintained Nursery Schools (Local Authority)

  • Run by Warrington Borough Council and usually attached to primary schools.

  • Offer free early education places for children aged 3 and 4 (and some 2-year-olds).

  • Care is usually provided during school hours and terms, with possible wrap round child care.


5. Preschools

5. Playgroups & Parents and toddler groups

  • Often run by volunteers or local community groups.

  • Provide sessional care (e.g. mornings or afternoons) for children aged 2 to 5.

5. Wraparound and Out-of-School Clubs

  • Include breakfast clubs, after-school care, and holiday clubs.

  • Usually available from 8am to 6pm, mainly for primary-aged children.

  • Can take place on or off school premises, and may be run by schools, private groups, or childminders.

  • Great for working parents who need care before or after school or during school holidays.

  • Some are part of government-supported schemes like the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) Programme.
